LRD is capable of collecting longitudinal roughness data for use in calculations of International Roughness Index (IRI), Ride Number (RN), and Macrotexture (MT). This is achieved using multiple high-frequency laser sensors mounted on the front of the vehicle. The Road Surface Profiler (RSP) made by Dynatest is currently used in DHDV.

WayLinks’ Profile Detector software implements several software filtering algorithms to clean noises from the signal, and performs real-time IRI, RN, and MT calculations according to the American Standards and Testing Materials consortium (ASTM). The Profile Detector also includes the rutting measurement sub-system (LRMS).
